Why the Bible and the Quran need to be updated
This article is aimed at Christians and Muslims who dislike having Christianity and Islam criticized. I’m sure it’s applicable to some other religions as well.
If it was part of the party platform of a political party that under certain conditions you should decapitate or stone people to death, then no sensible person would question our right to criticize that political party as a whole because of that. We would demand that the party in question would remove that section of their platform.
Now, the thing is, that both the Bible and the Quran advocate the killing of humans under certain conditions, through beheading or stoning, for example. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 21:18–21 that unruly children should be stoned to death, and in Mattew 5:17–18 it goes on to say that this law, along with all other Old Testament law, does not change with the appearance of Jesus, which many claim. The fact that other Bible passages could be interpreted to contradict this is not my problem; that is for the Christians to resolve.
But if Christians and Muslims insist that I’m interpreting things incorrectly, then I would invite them to update their Holy texts to clarify what God actually wants us to do. What? What’s that?
